Is my journal data private and secure?
Yes. Your data is never stored on a third party server; your journal lives on your device and syncs through your own private iCloud. Anthurium Creative LLC can't read or recover it. Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest via iCloud. Enabling Apple's Advanced Data Protection adds full end-to-end encryption. For more information see our Privacy Policy.
Do you sell or share my data?
No. We do not sell ads, use third-party trackers, or sell any data. We do use an analytics platform for product development, but all analytics are anonymized and never include journal content or location data. For more information see our Privacy Policy.
Do I need to create an account to use WritePath?
No. You do not need to create a WritePath login or email. Your data is tied to your iCloud account.
Can I export my data?
Yes. You can export all of your data or re-import it as JSON files at any time. There is also a "Delete All Data" option.
Can I import my data from other apps?
Currently importing WritePath files are supported, as well as import from Swarm/Foursquare. Importing from other apps may be supported in the future.
How do Location Suggestions work?
If you enable Location Suggestions and give WritePath "Always On" location permissions on your iPhone, then WritePath will use Apple's Visit Monitoring API to detect when you have moved from one location to another. This means that when WritePath isn't open, it isn't tracking your location at every moment. WritePath only receives data when your phone has detected that you are in a new location. This method is very battery efficient.
When your iPhone detects that you've changed locations, it hands WritePath the coordinates, along with when you arrived and when you left. WritePath first checks those coordinates against the places you've logged in the past. If you're in the vicinity of multiple places you've been to before, it will prioritize the one you've been to most recently. If there are no saved places nearby the coordinates, WritePath will ask the Apple Maps API what's at those coordinates and pick the location or address closest to those coordinates.
Whenever WritePath detects you've changed locations, it will create a new suggested entry, which you can either approve, edit, or reject.
How do Calendar Suggestions work?
If you enable Calendar Suggestions, you will have the option of choosing which calendars you want to sync. You will also be given the option to either import or ignore all-day events. Calendar entries will appear as suggested entries, which you can approve, edit, or reject.
When you turn on Calendar Suggestions on one of your devices, that device will become the primary device that syncs with your calendar. You can change which device is the primary syncing device at any time in Settings.
How do Photo Suggestions work?
When you attach photos or videos to entries, WritePath doesn't actually save copies of the photos or videos to the entry. Instead, WritePath just saves a reference to the photo and video. This means that if the photo or video is deleted in the Photos app, or if Photo library access permissions are revoked, those photos and videos will not be available in WritePath. This also means that adding a photo or video to an entry takes up virtually no additional storage space on your phone or iCloud account.
If you turn on Photo Suggestions, WritePath will pull in all the photos and videos in your Photo library within the time period of the entry.
Do entry suggestion features drain battery life?
No. Location suggestions, calendar suggestions, and photo suggestions were all designed to be battery efficient. These features typically use less than 1% of battery life in a day.
Does WritePath support multi-device sync?
Yes. WritePath uses iCloud to sync across your Apple devices, allowing you to continue journaling on your iPad or Mac.
Can you use WritePath on a non-Apple device?
No, only Apple devices are supported.
What is the benefit of upgrading to Premium
For free users, location suggestions and calendar suggestions are available to review for 24 hours. For premium users, those suggestions are available indefinitely.
Can I access all of my data if I downgrade from Premium?
Any entries suggestions you have approved, or any entries you have created manually, are available in the free version. If you downgrade from Premium, any unreviewed suggestions that are older than 24 hours will no longer be available to review. That data isn't deleted - it is available again if you choose to renew your subscription.
Can I import my check-ins from Swarm?
Yes, WritePath supports importing Swarm check-ins. You can request your data from Swarm, and instructions on how to import that data can be found below.
How is WritePath different from Apple Journal or Day One?
While both Apple Journal and Day One have some location awareness and calendar awareness features, they weren't designed to actively help you log key events throughout your day. WritePath is unique in that it combines journaling features with location tracking features in apps like Swarm to make WritePath useful as both a quick reference of the events of your day, and as a deeper journaling app.
Does WritePath work with Siri and Shortcuts?
Yes. You can give Siri a prompt like "Siri, create an entry in WritePath" to quickly log an entry.
WritePath also supports Shortcuts. You can, for example, automatically create entries when certain events happen, such as your alarm going off in the morning, or completing a workout on your Apple Watch. If you have an iPhone with an Action button, you could also tie the shortcut to that button so that you can create entries with a single press while you're on the go.
